Advancing Sustainability and Efficiency: Tencorr’s Fully Automated Starch Silo System
At Royal Containers, we value our partnerships in packaging who share our commitment to innovation, leadership, and advancing environmental stewardship. That’s why we are thrilled to announce the successful implementation of a ground-breaking initiative at our vertical integration partner’s facility, Tencorr. After a year and a half of meticulous planning and implementation, Tencorr recently celebrated the first full day of production with their state-of-the-art fully automated Starch Silo System on February 29th.
The introduction of the Starch Silo System marks a significant milestone in Tencorr’s journey towards cost-saving, efficiency enhancement, and sustainable practices. This cutting-edge system offers benefits that are poised to advance the way starch handling is approached in the modern packaging industry.
Cost Savings and Efficiency
One of the most prominent advantages of the Starch Silo System is its potential for substantial cost savings. By transitioning from the traditional method of using Supersacs to bulk starch, Tencorr stands to benefit from the reduced cost of raw materials. Bulk starch is not only more cost-effective but also eliminates the need for labour-intensive processes such as offloading, staging, and disposal of Supersacs.
The system’s fully automated nature streamlines operations, minimizing human intervention and maximizing efficiency. Instead of manual handling, a truck pulls into the facility and offloads 22,000 kgs of starch directly into the giant tank outside the yard. From there, the starch is automatically transferred into a receiving hopper and then into the mix tank, eliminating the need for forklifts and manual labour-intensive tasks.

Improved Housekeeping and Safety
The Starch Silo System also brings significant improvements in housekeeping within the plant. The elimination of handling Supersacs reduces starch dust in the air which ultimately settles on the production floor. Workers no longer need to contend with cleaning up residual starch, leading to a cleaner and safer workplace. Moreover, the system frees up maintenance personnel to focus on preventative maintenance tasks, ensuring the continuous smooth operation of the facility without disruptions.
Furthermore, the system’s modern fire suppression technology ensures the safe handling of starch from receipt to processing, mitigating any potential risks associated with such combustible materials.
Sustainability at its Core
Perhaps the most commendable aspect of Tencorr’s Starch Silo System lies in its inherent sustainability. The initiative not only addresses immediate operational challenges but also aligns with broader environmental goals. By eliminating the disposal of Supersacs into landfills, the company has made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint. It’s estimated that Tencorr’s switch to the Starch Silo System has prevented over 16 Supersacs per week from entering landfills. Considering the slow degradation rate of Supersacs in landfills, which can take several decades, this initiative marks a substantial contribution to environmental preservation. The new system will divert thousands of Supersacs from ending up in landfills, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
The successful implementation of the fully automated Starch Silo System at Tencorr marks a significant milestone in the packaging industry. Not only does it promise substantial cost savings and efficiency improvements, but it also underscores Tencorr’s commitment to sustainability. As a proud partner of Tencorr, we are thrilled to see our industry driving innovation and positive change in the modern world of packaging.
