Leading the Way with our Partnerships in Sustainability Series, Introduction to Vertical Integration
Royal Containers has been committed to sustainability since the 1980s. We are always exploring new ways to implement green-friendly business initiatives. Beyond using 100 percent recycled material, we have adopted and implemented a vertical integration model for the last 30 years to help us to stay competitive and to achieve our sustainability goals.
So, what is vertical integration? Vertical integration is a strategy that allows a company to streamline its operations by taking direct ownership of various stages of its production process rather than relying on external contractors or suppliers.
At Royal Containers, this approach has been instrumental in the production and delivery of products to our customers, especially during the last couple of years. There have been many reasons why our industry has experienced supply and demand issues such as the global effect of COVID, a shortage of supplies and raw materials, limitations of human resources (think truck drivers), held up materials on container ships, and now a war in Europe.
Despite these challenges, Royal Containers’ vertically integrated model assures our confidence and security in helping our customers meet the continued increased demand for eCommerce sales.
Our key motivation over the last 30 years to invest in companies involved in different areas of corrugated production was to help ensure our supply chain sustainability.
In fact, for Royal Containers, supply chain sustainability means the consideration of environmental, social, and economic impacts, and the encouragement of good governance practices, throughout the life cycles of our corrugated products.
It’s truly all about increased control within our supply chain while aligning with our commitment to green-friendly practices.
A Royal Containers box arriving on a doorstep has gone through 5 key stages. We call it the Lifecycle of our Corrugated Packaging and every single stage; from mill to corrugator to production to our clients and their customers, and back again; plays a role in how we can ensure customer satisfaction and sustainable operations.
In our upcoming blog series “Leading the Way with our Partnerships in Sustainability, we will showcase the benefits of these 2 partnerships with Greenpac Mill and Tencorr, both from a supply and a sustainability advantage.
The next blog begins where the process begins, Greenpac Mill. In the meantime, watch our video on The Lifecycle of Corrugated, as seen through a child’s eyes.
