Royal Containers: A Truly Canadian Company Eh?

Royal Containers Celebrates Canada Day

When most Canadians hear Canada Day, it means fireworks, a Blue Jays game and the year’s biggest national party. At Royal Containers, we are as Canadian as a lumberjack, covered in maple syrup at Jurassic Park listening to Drake! Okay, maybe an exaggeration, but we do celebrate our Canadian heritage each and every day. Royal Containers invests in Canadian businesses, practices socially responsible business ethics when it comes to sustainability, specifically deforestation in Canada, and we sponsor Canadian athletes.

Supports Canadian organizations/companies

Royal Containers is involved in Canadian charities such as Steve Duplantis Golf Charity Event, Hockey Helps the Homeless, and provides financial support to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation, Autism Speaks Canada, Sick Kids Foundation and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Whether it be physically participating in an event, sponsorship or donations, Royal Containers hand selects the charities we support that seek to improve the lives of all Canadians.

Royal Containers also chooses to invest in Canadian businesses.  We have formed several major strategic partnerships with industrial facilities. In the early ’90s, Royal Containers partnered with North America’s first ever jointly-owned sheet feeder operation, Tencorr Packaging. Royal Containers also invested in a Greenpac Mill based out of Niagara Falls, N.Y. with a fellow Canadian packaging manufacturer, Cascades.  Our supply chain partnerships with sheet feeders and a paper mill have formed a vertical integration model, where not only is the material being recycled, but money is also being re-directed back into Canadian companies.

Protects Deforestation in Canada

Royal Containers cares about deforestation in Canada and global sustainability practices overall. There is a misconception that the paper industry is devastating our forestlands. Royal Containers sponsored the book Deforestation In Canada and Other Fake News by John Mullinder, to inform people about the relationship between sustainability and the paper industry. The book points out that less than half of one percent of forests is harvested each year for the paper production industry. This is another virtue of the vertical integration process, it promotes sustainability and recycling corrugated material. Royal Containers uses only 100% recycled content and is in line with the rest of the country. Canada has an impressive recycling rate of 98% (2015) and we are proud to contribute to this trend. Way to go Canadians!

Invests in Canadian athletes

Athleticism is more than just a way of life at Royal Containers, it is part of our DNA. The health of our employees, their children and people in our community are always a top priority, in fact, it’s part of our Core Values. We work closely with C3 Canadian Cross Training Club, a local charitable organization, to support future athletes.
Royal Containers sponsors organized events, such as the annual 5k Furry Friends Run or golf tournament, and 100% of the proceeds go towards supporting and the development of Canada’s future Olympic Athletes. Our company also employs high-performance athletes during the summer months. Once employed, the athletes are offered flexible work schedules to accommodate for their rigorous athletic training.

“It can be hard to get support for athletes in Canada, so we do what we can with fundraising and when possible, we hire them to work at Royal to ensure they have the income to support their efforts.”

-President & CEO Kim Nelson

Our corporate values reflect true Canadian spirit. Much like our great nation; we are leaders, we care for others, we place a high emphasis on performance and are constantly adapting and responding to the market’s needs. Our hardworking employees are respectful, polite and regular Canadians who put their hockey pants on, one leg at a time.

We believe that we fall into the Canadian stereotype, and we aren’t ‘sorry’ about that!
