Royal’s Green Efforts for Earth Month

Royal’s Green Efforts for Earth Month | Royal Containers Corrugated Packaging Solutions, Brampton & St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

Earth Month is the perfect time to highlight real action toward sustainability—and at Royal Containers, that’s exactly what we’re doing. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s built into our daily operations. Thanks to our strategic partnerships with Greenpac Mill and Tencorr Packaging, we’ve created a closed-loop system that makes every Royal box part of a greener future.

Why Vertical Integration Matters

Controlling the process from start to finish makes all the difference when it comes to sustainability. Our partnerships with Greenpac and Tencorr give us direct input into how our materials are sourced, processed, and turned into packaging. This allows us to minimize waste, reduce our environmental footprint, and create high-quality, fully recyclable packaging.

Greenpac: Where Recycled Fibre Becomes Linerboard

Greenpac Mill is at the heart of our sustainability model. As one of North America’s most advanced recycled paper mills, it produces linerboard using 100% recycled fibre, primarily from old corrugated containers (OCC) and scrap material—much of which comes from Royal Containers and other industry partners.

  • Zero Waste Production: Greenpac runs on a closed-loop system, repurposing all by-products, so nothing ends up in a landfill. It even converts waste into energy to power its operations.
  • Significant Impact, Smart Design: The mill produces 1,400 tonnes of paper daily, including Greenpac XP—a high-strength, sustainable linerboard.

Tencorr: Turning Linerboard into Corrugated Sheets

Tencorr Packaging plays a crucial role in our process by transforming Greenpac’s linerboard into corrugated sheets. As Canada’s largest independent corrugating company, Tencorr helps us meet the demand for sustainable packaging at scale.

  • 100% Recycled Material: Tencorr sources its containerboard from Greenpac and other recycled paper mills, ensuring that every sheet we use is environmentally responsible.
  • Serious Capacity: Producing over 2 billion square feet of corrugated sheets annually, Tencorr helps us stay ahead of industry needs while keeping sustainability front and center.

Royal Containers: Bringing It All Together

Once we receive corrugated sheets from Tencorr, we manufacture durable, high-performance packaging and displays at both our Brampton and St. Thomas facilities. Here’s how we keep sustainability at the core of our operations:

  • Minimizing Waste: We collect all of our production scrap materials and send them back to Greenpac for recycling, keeping the loop going.
  • Customer Collaboration: We work with customers to collect and recycle corrugated materials and protective packaging, ensuring these materials don’t go to waste.
  • Smart Packaging Design: By helping customers optimize their packaging, we reduce material use while maintaining strength and durability.

Earth Month and Beyond: Why This Matters

Being sustainable isn’t just about celebrating Earth Month—it’s about making fundamental, lasting changes. Our integrated approach ensures that every Royal box contributes to a cleaner, greener future. By keeping materials in circulation and reducing waste at every stage, we’re proving that sustainable manufacturing is possible and the way forward.

We’re constantly pushing to do more. Royal Containers is committed to leading the way in sustainable packaging, from expanding recycling programs to exploring new eco-friendly packaging innovations. Our work with Greenpac and Tencorr is just the beginning, and we’re excited to keep raising the bar.

This Earth Month, we’re doubling down on our commitment to sustainability—because every step we take today helps build a better tomorrow.
