Royal Containers, Leading the Way with our Partnerships in Sustainability Series

Royal Containers, Leading the Way with our Partnerships in Sustainability Series

For the conclusion of our Leading the Way with our Partnerships in Sustainability series, we are going to have a look at our own position within the vertical integration strategy to improve the environmental performance of our business. As the manufacturer of corrugated displays, boxes and packaging, we are very proud to use only 100% recycled containerboard in our products.

The Process

Royal Containers has two key supply chain partners: Tencorr Packaging and Greenpac Mill. We are united in a strict independent standard for responsibly sourced raw materials. This ethic is how 100% recycled fibre, lightweight linerboard that excels in all its characteristics while reducing weight and retaining strength is at the core of every Royal Containers product.

The network is mutually beneficial from the paper mill, where recycled corrugated packaging and paper are broken down to pulp and then made into our raw material of paper, to the corrugator, which turns the paper into corrugated sheets, to Royal where we manufacture boxes and displays from the sheets.

Collaborative Cycles

The loop on the cycle closes when baling systems on the manufacturing floors at Royal gather the roughly 3% of cuttings leftover from the die-cut processes. At both of Royal’s St. Thomas and Brampton locations, production teams take pride in knowing that 100% of material received into our plants goes either to our customers or gets mixed with the post-consumer board that is recycled and turned into paper again at the mill.

According to Royal’s Director of Operations, Brent Hill, “We are especially happy to consider requests from customers to pick up board that they collect. We can pick up a skid or two of corrugated products from their expired campaigns or the board that is used to protect their products during delivery.” This keeps our balers busy and recycled content in the stream!

It is just one example of how Royal engages with customers to find ways to build more efficient, more eco-friendly, more paper-based products with more focus on waste reduction. Royal Containers believes that good relationships are made great when customers can team with us to find ways to align with our sustainability values, for example, by reducing the weight of their packing material.

The Future

In 2022, we have lengthened the scope of how we define our sustainability goals. We have committed to responsible stewardship in all that we do, which also means taking care of employee health and safety, ensuring economic sustainability, and supporting our local communities. Our corporate values support each of these initiatives. We say, “we respond, we perform, we care and we lead”. And, we do.
