Royal Containers : Supporting Local Athletes

Royal Containers : Supporting Local Athletes

Local involvement is more than a tradition at Royal Containers Ltd.,– it’s part of their DNA. President & CEO Kim Nelson is a passionate supporter of sport and athletes in the community, and she herself is a 16-time Ironman finisher, winning major awards around the globe.

So, it comes as no surprise that Royal has supported many high-performance athletes through the years with sponsorship and by providing employment that fits with their intensive training schedules. When 2x amateur World Triathlon champion Kristen Marchant needed flexible employment to let her train and race as well as work, Royal Containers created a job for her. The new position at Royal Containers was specifically created to take advantage of Kristen’s academic knowledge as well as enable her to have time off to train and travel to her big races. Since starting at Royal Containers, Kristen has won major races in North America and has lofty goals over the next few years which she could achieve with the company’s support.

In addition, Nelson has been instrumental in helping fundraise for the C3 Kinetico Kids of Steel Races, the yearly Fall Running Festival in Caledon, and ensuring that the local kids have the proper equipment to participate in sport. Beyond the yearly participation Kids of Steel Triathlon, Royal Containers has also been the key sponsor of the C3 High Performance Team. “Royal Containers’ support for our High Performance Team has been more than just a yearly cheque” said High Performance & Olympic Coach Barrie Shepley. “Senior staff at Royal Containers have provided leadership, employment for athletes who have needed part-time work and the involvement of their staff in volunteering and supporting C3 programs.” said Shepley.

“We are so proud to support and recognize these young kids in their drive to become professional athletes.” says Nelson “We’re so proud to see many go through the C3 program and on to the Olympics, the Pan Am and Commonwealth Games.”

In June, Royal Containers presented the 2018 Bike, Golf & Dinner for Future Champions along with Benson Steel and Vanilla Prepaid. Held Tuesday, June 19, at the Caledon Golf and Country Club, the event featured an opportunity to meet and ride with the C3 Professionals and alumni and listen to action photographer Marketa Schusterova,

Nelson adds “100% of the proceeds of this event will go towards the support and development of Canada’s future Olympic Athletes. It can be hard to get support for athletes in Canada, so we do what we can with fundraising and when possible, we hire them to work at Royal to ensure they have the income to support their efforts.”

“Our biggest priority with our athletes are to help create world-class people who not only have the ability to win some of the biggest swim-bike-run races in the world, but also have the ability to be major leaders in the country when their sporting days are over” said Shepley. “Leadership starts at the top and there is no question that having Royal Container’s CEO Kim Nelson as a world class master swimmer, triathlete/runner and dynamic business owner has been critical in helping our C3 athletes progress”.

Nelson’s enthusiasm for the program is evident in the CBC The Olympians video featuring Royal Containers protégée, Andrew Yorke who went on to compete in the 2014 Summer Olympics as a triathlete. You can see her at 1:32 in the video below.

It’s evident that Kim Nelson and the Royal Family understand that there’s nothing more important than the support of a community to help fuel athletic dreams. They truly go the extra mile to support and inspire the next generation of triathlon Olympians through their support of the local community. Now that’s some great DNA!
