Cyber Security Threats To The Corrugated Industry

Cyber Security Threats To The Corrugated Industry

The global pandemic has changed the way businesses operate. The stay-at-home orders forced a rapid shift for industrial enterprises to set up an infrastructure to support remote workers. While this posed a challenge for many traditional manufacturing companies, it also opened up a new risk that many businesses were not prepared for, cyber threats.

People are more digitally connected than ever. Whether it is working from home, shopping online, or on social media, people are increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks online. In the United States, the FBI Cyber Division reported a 400% increase in the number of attacks during the pandemic, resulting in as many as 4,000 new cases a day.

Typically, once a computer hacker takes hold of a certain line of business, they often target others within the same industry. In the past several months, we have seen an uptick in the cyberattacks directed towards the corrugated space. Several of our industry leaders revealed they were hit by a ransomware attack earlier this year.

At Royal Containers, we are not taking this threat lightly. We have hired a cyber security firm and have initiated company-wide cyber-security training. This program offers completely customizable cybersecurity training and helps assess individual employee’s vulnerability to cyber risks. As part of the training, our employees will participate in a 4-part program on the basics of cybersecurity and how to protect both our company and our customers online. One of the main benefits of the program is the applicable knowledge test. After our employees are trained on the fundamentals, the system sends out a simulated “scam” email to test if any employee open the email. It automatically and immediately follows up with users to let them know if the e-mail was a simulated attack and gives remedial courses to those who open the simulated phishing email to further strengthen their knowledge.

When employees can clearly identify a phishing email, it allows each individual to become an active part of the defence against potential cyber-attacks on Royal Containers and our partners. Knowledge in this area is particularly useful as a new report from PhishMe found that 91% of cyberattacks start with a phishing email.

As an essential service, our plants and offices have made significant adjustments for COVID-19. Including staggered lunches, allowing some departments to work from home, masks, and increased sanitation protocols and now we are training the team on digital protection. With the help of a new cyber security program, we will execute cybersecurity awareness programs that empower individuals in our organization to make informed decisions and reduce our cyber risk.
